2020 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2020 Subaru Forester
When it comes down to it, shopping for a crossover or SUV might just be the hardest type of car shopping you ever do. Every auto company usually has at least three or four different options to choose from. Do the math and that comes out to well over 100 vehicles to sift through, not including trims and options. It’s overwhelming.
Let us help. Today, we’ll be comparing two very popular crossover options: the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2020 Subaru Forester. Keep reading to see what we found in our research.
There’s no two ways about it. The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas is bigger. The Atlas comes standard with three-row, seven-person seating. The middle row can also be upgraded to captain’s chairs from a bench seat, which brings down the max seating to six. That’s still more than the 2020 Forester can manage. It’s a two-row affair that can seat five people, assuming your passengers are okay with cramming themselves into the rear seat.
It’s not just seating that the Atlas does better. It has way more available cargo space too. Behind the rear row, the Atlas has 20.6 cu-ft of space. Fold those seats down and you have 55.5 cu-ft. With both rear rows down, there’s 96.8 cu-ft, one of the highest cargo bay dimensions available across the entire passenger vehicle market. To its credit, the Forester is also pretty roomy. But the 35.4 cu-ft and 76.1 cu-ft measurements behind the respective rows just doesn’t compare.
Better Engine Options
The 2020 Forester comes with one engine: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. No turbocharger, no V6 variant. Just the one option. While it is efficient, it’s not remotely quick or exciting. Acceleration is slow, both from a stop or while trying to make a pass on the highway. The 2020 Atlas, on the other hand, has two different options to choose from. There’s the fuel efficient (20-city/24-hwy mpg) 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 235 horsepower. For those that prefer performance, there’s a 3.6-liter V6 that pumps out a whopping 276 horses.
