What is engine start-stop, and should I use it?

First of all, if you are considering turning off the start-stop feature in your Volkswagen vehicle, we would love to know why. Do you not like saving money on fuel, or do you just want to compare the difference with and without this feature? Engine start-stop in a Volkswagen vehicle allows you to save money on fuel by cutting back on idling time. Keep reading below to learn more about the start-stop feature, also known as Auto Stop, and about whether you can turn it off for good.

What is Volkswagen Auto Stop?

Volkswagen Auto Stop automatically is activated when your vehicle is on. When you press on the gas pedal, you engage Auto Stop, which cuts off your vehicle’s power while you are stopped. In this way, it can save you fuel over time. When you want to go again, all you must do is press on the gas pedal, the accelerator, and your vehicle’s engine will automatically come back on.

Won’t starting and stopping my engine waste fuel?

Actually no, this popular myth about engines comes from the idea that it takes a lot of fuel to start an engine. Only a drop of fuel is needed to get everything running, and the engine start-stop feature has been found to save fuel, not waste it.

Can I permanently turn off engine start-stop?

You can’t permanently turn off this feature, but you can turn it off. The button next to your vehicle’s gear shifter that says “A Off” will turn off Auto Stop. Next time you turn your ignition switch on, it will automatically turn on again, which means that this is not a permanent solution. However, with the benefits of engine start-stop, we would recommend keeping it on.

I find air conditioning does not work correctly when auto stop is engaged.

Start/stop is extremely irritating if you live in a hot climate. We’ve had a Golf for 3 years and the air conditioning is never turned off. The fuel savings of start/stop are minuscule compared to the overall fuel use in city driving, anyway. It’s another case of a “feature” provided because somebody thought it was a good idea and was do-able, but doesn’t suit all driving conditions.

Start/Stop can be switched off via the OBD Interface using a software app like VCDS. Driving Diesels at high speed on european motorways and then getting off the freeway, the start stop system switches the engine off while at the traffic light. That is not good for the turbo, since the engine needs to continue idling to cool itself down. I know a lot of GTD and less powerful VW Diesel Drivers that have it switched off on this side of the atlantic. The savings is negligible especially when using a DSG gearbox which is already optimizing your gear changes (if you are not using the S option). So, nearly no reason. And the other thing, I found it is irritating because the split second until the engine starts again it does take away your chance to get into the traffic if you are coming from a minor road and you have to give at a crossing.
